The BBC has announced a second series of the long-running Sunday night drama Lark Rise To Candleford.

The series stars Julia Sawalha, Olivia Hallinan, Dawn French, Brendan Coyle, Olivia Grant, Mark Heap, Ben Miles and Liz Smith in Bill Gallagher’s adaptation of Flora Thompson’s magical memoir of her Oxfordshire childhood.
“We are delighted with our audience’s positive and warm reaction to Lark Rise To Candleford and have subsequently commissioned a second series of 12 episodes for transmission in 2009,” said Kate Harwood, Head of Series and Serials for BBC Drama Production.
“The talent and strength of the assembled cast and production team pay tribute to the excellence of Bill’s Gallagher’s vision and scripts.”
Set in the small hamlet of Lark Rise and the wealthier neighbouring market town, Candleford, at the end of the 19th century, the series chronicles the daily lives of farm workers, craftsmen and gentry, observing characters in loving, boisterous and competing communities of families, rivals, friends and neighbours.
Written and Executive produced by Bill Gallagher, who added: “What struck me first about Flora Thompson’s three books was how they are teeming with wonderful characters and anecdotes, story lines come tumbling off the pages thick and fast. I can’t wait to start work on the new series.”
The first episode transmitted on 13 January at 7.40pm on BBC One with viewing figures of 6.7m, peaking at 7.1m. The second episode brought an audience of 6.5m, peaking at 6.8m (slot average is 5.5m).
The second series has been recommissioned by Jane Tranter, Controller of BBC Fiction and will begin filming later this year for transmission in 2009.

I was wondering whether Dawn and all the other great characters will be back for the new series. Dawn is great in this drama and will be missed if not.
i think Dorcus is veary clever and i think she is clever
Im sooooo happy that there is a secon series. I love the show and Sir Timothy is a hottie!!!
WILL SIR TIMOTHY BE IN THE NEXT SERIES??????
Hopefully Sir Timothy will be back….and preferably minus Lady Adelaide as it would be interesting to see if Dorcas would change her mind about a relationship working between them because of the class barrier if she were given a second chance. Plus he is cute
Splendid news of a second series!! Do bring back schoolmaster James Delafied (Stephen Campbell Moore.) Miss Dorcas Lane deserves better than being left as a resigned spinster.
I agree, please bring back the schoolmaster character James Delafield. He was just lovely in every way, everything that Dorcas deserved.
I HATED that schoolmaster!!!! Taking Dorcus away from Timothy!!
And DEFINITELY minus Lady Adelaide!!! I really want Timothy and Dorcus to get together!!
i really hope sir timothy and dorcas get together! its just ot right if there not! i cried when timothy told dorcas he was moving to london with lady adaleighed, god i could of screamed at her ! shes a city girl not a country girl , shes also a selfish cow! does anyone know if timothy is goin to be in the next series ? xxxx
What fantastic news – a second series. I actually felt like I was a part of the scene, which is amazing, particularly since here, deep in the Australian Bush, it is a world and a couple of centuries away. I can hardly wait for the new series so I can buy the dvd. I loved the strength that held the village together demonstrated by Robert & Emma Timmins.
I’m so excited they are creating another series. I just bought the first series on dvd and enjoyed it so much.
I hope all the characters remain and bring back the schoolmaster. Sir Timothy made his bed, let Dorcas have the gorgeous teacher.

FOR GOD’S SAKE, you sad lot, just let this wonderfull series progress at it’s own pace – it is FABULOUS -
It reminds me of 60 years ago in Harting, Sussex !
Yes i agree i liked the school teacher James Delafield he was drop dead gorgeous. Bring Lady Adelaide back she was nice andafter all Dorcas could have married Sir Timothy & chose otherwise it is her own fault. He is now a married man 7 the times depicted is the 19th century not the 21st. I enjoyed this series too and watched it twice on dvd.
I think James Delafield is the most suitable man for dorcas.Sir Timothy was too conservative to do anything for her except bringing the pain.
who is james delafield????
oh thats right the school teacher, sorry
This Sunday’s episode of Harvest Home was superb. The companionship and dedication of the inhabitants of LarkRise and Candleford was inspiring. The photography was like a painting, perfectly set and perfectly reproduced with the actors working in unison. A lesson to us all. Congratulations to the production team and all the crew. Magnificent. Thank you for an episode I shall long remember. E/J. Kent
