Lark Rise To Candleford returns for a second series with a feature-length Christmas special, followed by 11 new episodes of this popular and heart-warming adaptation of Flora Thomson’s charming memoir of her Oxfordshire childhood.

Julia Sawalha, Olivia Hallinan, Dawn French, Brendan Coyle and Mark Heap return to delight and entertain in a wonderfully captivating seasonal tale that unites the past and the present.

There’s also an extra festive treat for viewers in the form of guest star Sheridan Smith (Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps, Love Soup and Jonathan Creek – The Grinning Man) in the role of Cinderella Doe.

When Dorcas and Emma each want to give Laura the same gift for Christmas, an old family wound is opened up and Laura finds herself torn between two mothers.

As the inhabitants of Lark Rise and Candleford prepare for the festivities, loyalties are tested and, amid the gift-giving and carol singing, tensions are building.

However, the arrival of a ragged, bare-footed young woman, who goes by the name of Cinderella Doe, introduces a note of Christmas mystery.

With its usual mix of charm, warmth, comedy and pathos, Lark Rise To Candleford kicks off its new season with a story rich in history.

Laura Timmins is played by Olivia Hallinan, Dorcas Lane by Julia Sawalha, Caroline Arless by Dawn French, Emma Timmins by Claudie Blakley, Robert Timmins by Brendan Coyle, Alf Arless by John Dagleish, Thomas Brown by Mark Heap, Queenie Turrill by Linda Bassett, Twister Turrill by Karl Johnson, Ruby Pratt by Victoria Hamilton, Pearl Pratt by Matilda Ziegler, Miss Ellison by Sandy McDade and Walter Arless by Robert Pugh.

Lark Rise To Candleford is also being simulcast on the BBC HD channel – the BBC’s High Definition channel available through Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media. With up to five times more detail than standard definition television, HD gives you exceptionally vivid colours and crisp pictures to make Lark Rise To Candleford a truly cinematic TV experience.

One and a half hours into this sequel, the characters are, yet again, used to portray some story line totally foreign to the original book.
This episode, far from being: “”In this Christmas special, Lark Rise and Candleford will be transformed into a magical place where families and friends are brought together for this special time of year,” comments Kate Harwood, Head of Series and Serials for BBC Drama Production,” it is totally unrelated to Christmas sentiments of Christ’s giving of himself for the salvation of the souls of those that would repent of their sins, (read the Bible if you dispute this,) and is absolutely based on pagan practice or witchcraft and ghosty stories.
Utterly rubbish – utterly wasted money – no better tha Ghost Busters. The characters were wasted on this appaling storyline, written with a total ignonace of anything related to Chistmas. An utter disgrace to bill this story as heartwarming for Christmas.

The girl who play cinderella doe is in “two pints of lager and a packet of crisps” and also played Anthonys girlfriend Emma in The Royle Family.

Hi, Chris (comment 7),
Just wondering, if you hated the show much why come to the very-hard-to-find fansite to slag it off? Not very Christmassy mate!
But yes, I loved it! Bring on series two!

I thought the Christmas episode was wonderful! I can’t wait for the 4th january so I can continue watching the new series. When series 1 ended I really missed it as until Little Dorrit started there was nothing else on TV worth watching. I hope the BBC continue to make Lark Rise for a very long time.

I am thoroughly enjoying Sunday nights now! What a lovely, gentle, feel-good story this is….how can I have been so stupid as to have ignored the first series! I am now desperate to track down the first series on DVD, hopefully by half term (I’m a teacher, so this will be a lovely way to unwind, in between marking and prep!) Lark Rise To Candleford….LOVE IT!

I thoroughly agree with comment 7.

The whole series was lovely – but that first episode would have put me off if I hadn’t already seen the first series. It had an entirely different character to the rest of the series and just didn’t belong. Instead of being about human interaction in a society with largely Christian values it was an occult ghost story, unpleasant and scary.

I don’t watch Lark Rise to Candleford to have my pulse raised. I watch it because it makes me think about the society they lived in, because it is full of wit, humour and compassion and because it gives a gentle dose of the right emotions for a Sunday evening.

I just finished season one and the Christmas episode and have a question. I had read the episode guide on imdb.com and it says in the Christmas episode that Dorus receives a Christmas letter from Sir Timothy. I watched the entire episode and no letter from Timothy ever came! Did I miss it somehow or was that a mistake on imdb??

Just found your site after checking on BBC website for more Lark Rise – we have just seen the final episode of series two (Miss Margaret and Thomas’s Wedding). What a delightful series this was, and we here down under in New Zealand hope that BBC is planning to make another series – immediately! The characters are charming, the scenery delicious and best of all, it never seems to rain! More please – there’s heaps of unfinished business to continue a storyline. Dorcas is our favourite, Thomas a close second but the wee boy Sydney may steal all hearts yet.

I have watched all the episodes (I think) but I am puzzled to what happened to Caroline Arless. She had her baby and her husband came home during the celebrations for Zela’s birthday, then what? Can anybody help me fill this void in my memory? Pleeeeeaaaaaase.

Time January 25, 2010 at 6:24 pm

FranL – me too. I’ve just watched 3/3 – where Caroline’s baby is smuggled out of the prison and back to Larkrise. I watched series 2, but my memory is blank as to how she ended up alone and then in prison after her husband had vowed to leave the sea and live with his family. Please can someone help fill in this memory gap?

In response 26 and 28, i cant remember what happened to Caroline’s husband, but i do know that Caroline could carted off to prison ( literally by the way), due to having some debts which she has to work off. Hope that helps!
