James (Jason Merrells) is in a spin when a
woman from London arrives in Candleford

The arrival in Candleford of a well-to-do woman from London throws James Dowland into something of a spin, as BBC One’s adaptation of Flora Thompson’s childhood memoirs continues. It seems that the life he has lived since he left Lark Rise has not been as straightforward as he has so far portrayed, and some extraordinary revelations about his past threaten the very fabric of his trusting relationship with Dorcas.

When Emma’s father comes to Lark Rise, meanwhile, he stirs up emotions throughout the hamlet. The prospect of him remaining in the End House, however, does not go down well with Robert. And Old Edmund’s fondness for Queenie causes quite a rivalry between him and Twister, and a long-kept secret about Queenie and Twister’s relationship is revealed.

Jason Merrells plays James Dowland, Julia Sawalha plays Dorcas Lane, Claudie Blakley plays Emma Timmins, Brendan Coyle plays Robert Timmins, Paul Freeman plays Old Edmund, Linda Bassett plays Queenie Turrill and Karl Johnson plays Twister Turrill.

I’m afraid it’s just you MissRose – this episode will be Episode 8 (and there’s only 10 in the series arghhh what are we going to do in 3 week’s time when it’s finished?!!). I am very intruiged as to who this woman is that’s coming – Oh how I hope that it’s not an old flame… I am so incredibly desperate for him & Dorcas to get together!

Wow, that sounds like there will be a lot past/dark secrects revealed next sunday….
poor James not even one whole episode for him to be happy in love with Dorcas. I am still hoping for a kiss between them though!!! even if its just a quick shy one, before their not ot even started relationship crumbles again.
There was already this magic moment between them…if only the fireworks hadn’t interrupted the two (sigh).
OMG Lexy, your right the show is close to the end=(
@Miss Rose: since the x-mas special was counted as episode 1 (of the 2nd series) and there will be 10 ‘regluar’ episodes in the series, there are 4 episodes left. So last ep was no.7 (out of 10) but no.8 in the series…maybe that was your confusion?

Is it sunday yet?! =)

Great news about series 3! You just made my day! After all, Lark Rise to Candleford is my one weakness… (I know, that one was easy, but I couldn’t resist)

Good news, Gill! The episode you missed is shown again, Tuesday, 2.45am…..so set your DVD/video recorder. I only know because I had to do the same thing last week; my (often dopey) hubby forgot to record it on the Sunday (a huge row ensued!!!) then I thought I’d catch it on iplayer, but this kept freezing (another huge row!) and then I discovered the early morning re-showing! Hoorah!!
Hope this helps!
Bryony.

I love the show BUT where are the animals? Where are the cats and dogs? Twister would have had a lurcher wouldn’t he? We should be told.

I was sooooo hoping for a 3rd Series!!!
That are truely great news :-) ….does anybody know who many episodes it will contain?Wouldn’t it be great if there were more than just 10. I keep my fingers crossed! and maybe another feature length x-mas special would be sweet.

I know, I am hoping for another Christmas Special, or perhaps even a Midsummer special, that would be great!

There is no mention of the residents of Larkrise keeping pets in the book, the only animals they kept were fowls and pigs, I am re-reading the book again, this is the 3rd time in 6 month that I have read it, I just cant seem to get enough of Lark Rise.
I am going to re-read Still Glides The Stream by Flora Thompson after I have finished Lark Rise, I think that novel should be turned into a tv adaptation, then I shall re-read my Lark Rise cookery book, by Mary Norwak, and cook some of the food inspired by the Lark Rise To Candleford book.

Here is a link to the bbc website for Lark Rise.

I loved the beginning of this episode. Have we EVER seen Dorcas looking quite so happy and carefree??!! But have we EVER seen Laura looking quite so heartbroken :-(

I hated the middle of this episode – that mean and spiteful Celestia was so unpleasant and cruel and threatened to ruin everything the series has been building up to so far.

However it soon became clear that James truly did love Dorcas (although I’m sure that all us viewers knew that anyway!) and i adored what he did in order to gain her back… even though it didn’t work…. at first.

Then the end of the episode of course, gave us hope again. Yippee!

Although I am wondering what will become of James now he has given everything up. Do we think he’ll go back and live in Larkrise? Do we think that Dorcas will ever take him back?

Comment from Hanna
Time February 16, 2009 at 7:12 pm

Oh, I think she’ll take him back… probably… Although, what WOULD series 3 be about if Dorcas has found herself a man? Anyway, if I’m honest, I kinda secretly still hope that Mr Delafield will come back out of nowhere and the stupid business with the Pratt sisters will be forgotten… But since that’s not going to happen I guess JD will do…

Comment from Lexy
Time February 17, 2009 at 8:45 am

Fair comment Hannah – I’ve been watching all of series 1 too (DVD wahoo) and although Mr Delafield was gorgeously seductive and really understood Dorcas, I personally don’t think he was a long-term suitor. More a passionate fling!
JD on the other hand, is long-term, husband material!! Or he’d better be!

Comment from Hanna
Time February 17, 2009 at 9:14 am

Good point Lexy, you’re probably right. Or as you said, he’d better be good husband material! Or I’ll give him a lesson! I’d go over there, in my jeans (yes you heard me right, I’d be wearing jeans – appaling), fire in my eyes and my hair not at all in order (since I’d come straight from the sofa watching Lark Rise, nobody’s hair is in order then, well not in the 21st century anyway). And I’d tell him one or ten true things, then he’d see!

Hm… it doesn’t strike me as a splendid plan actually… Thinking of the time difference and such, oh what a jet lag!

oh gee, this can’t be healthy…I am getting more and more obsessed with this show!!! and I am so happy to read all your comments and see that I am not the only one out there ;-)
It was really wonderful to see Dorcas finally happy, it was like a weight was lifted from her shoulders, after all these years of repressed emotions.
This episode was also very well played, I was totally lost in the story while watching. I swear there were moments were I almost fergot to breathe :-0
The scene were James proposes to Dorcas (the first time on the street w/ no ring)…the way he looks at her…he is so in love!
I was very relived that Dorcas did not send him away in the end and there is still a chance for love- oh I couldn’t have stand it otherwise!
Also it was very nice touch by the writers to show James without cravat and jacket in the last scenes. That made him look all vunerable and human – no facade anymore. Well, the sight made my heart jump too and could have only been topped with a Darcy-like dip in the pool ;-)

I’m glad I found this forum, as you have given me the happy news about a third series!!!!! I, too, am utterly obsessed with Lark Rise. What a fantastic programme it is, the best thing on TV by a country mile haha!

It is criminal that Julia Sawalha hasn’t been given every award possible for her portrayal of Dorcas Lane!

To bad that there is no real forum here, it would be nice to have discussion theads instead of just posting comments. But still its very nice to see that there are so many people that love Lark Rise as much as I do!!

Hi Peeps, me new to this, but am a LRTC fan. I have to say i dont think James is man enough for Dorcas, they look so good together and i wish he would grow a spine, go round to that postoffice and tell her what he really feels, why telling her to hold her tongue and listen, as she is very good at giveing advice and just does listen when anyone trys to give her some!!!

To anyone who read the book – are they both in it?

I agree Hay. All he has to do is go round and tell her what he feels, not give her a letter! Is there definately a 3 rd series

Does the latest series of Larkrise follow the story as told in the book. The plots and characters all seem to have become a little unbelievable and melodramatic ! Why would anyone open a hotel in a a one horse town ? Why would anyone visit there ? Would an oprphan raised in a hamlet grow up to become an educated gent with a string of hotels in London ?

Yes and were there such people as itinerant Irish clock makers who forged their intricate mechanisms on the anvil of the village smithy !!

I think dorcus is being a fool – james is kind, funny, rich, not to mention drop dead gorgeous! Last nights episode has left me very emotional…..

Why do people who clearly don’t like L to C bother coming on here and insulting it – if you don’t like it that much then don’t watch it! It’s as simple as that and you can leave the rest of us in peace! L to C is one of the only series on TV that shows people being part of a community and treating others with respect doesn’t make you weak! Many more series’ to come please!
