As the annual Harvest Festival returns to Candleford, PC Patterson’s wife, as per usual, takes to her bed with a mysterious illness. But this year is different: she gives him her express permission to seek a new wife when she passes away. Patterson has no intention of doing such a thing – until a damsel in distress sets his heart soaring. Meanwhile, an unlikely rival from Lark Rise threatens to scupper his continued success in the Harvest Festival’s produce competitions, when Alf Arless sets his eyes on the two-shilling prize.

Later, Robert Timmins has a gift for Alf that could change both his future and the path of his blossoming romance with Nan.

Jason Watkins plays PC Patterson, Michelle Fairley plays Mrs Patterson, John Dagleish plays Alf Arless, Brendan Coyle plays Robert Timmins and Rebecca Night plays Nan. Lark Rise To Candleford also stars Olivia Hallinan as Laura Timmins, Jason Merrells as James Dowland, Julia Sawalha as Dorcas Lane, Matilda Ziegler as Pearl Pratt, Victoria Hamilton as Ruby Pratt, Claudie Blakley as Emma Timmins and Ruby Bentall as Minnie.

Tonight’s episode was great but thoroughly depressing! I liked that it focused on other characters but PLEASE, no more love misery for the women of Candleford! Its almost patronising that we have Alf’s love story going on as a side to the main women in Candleford. Seriously, if we don’t see some happiness for either Dorcas, Laura or one of the Pratt women soon, I’m going to lose interest! What does everyone else think?

yess tonights ep was great buh i agree JMac. although the focus on the other characters was good i think we need to see happiness for some of the main characters. i really hope something happens for dorcas – she deserves it!

I agree JMac. It looks like it won’t be Dorcas as Ami said on next weeks episode she finds out he has a son! Will they ever get together now?!
Perhaps Minnie could find love!

If you James and Dorcas do not marry each other I have told my husband I will not watch any more BBC programmes. They are made for each other.

Nice episode – way better than last weeks disapointing installment. I think it was right to see JD still there, but not too to the fore. Dorcas talking to Emma as a confidant, she must care to bother talking about him to her – he’s still under her skin, no matter how much she tries to dismiss him…there I go still hoping that all is not lost.
Love Ruby and Pearl as always, although the kitten was serious in danger of up-staging the lot of them.

Seems like the odds are stacked against them – he’s betrayed her trust by lying/not telling him about his arrangement with celestia…and now a child!! If JD and D get it together, it will be the greatest comeback since Liverpool came back from 3 – 0 down to win the European cup in 2006!

I loved this episode too – it was much happier than last weeks. I liked the fact that there was still interaction between JD and Dorcas because after last week I was doubtful that there would be. It would be great if they did actually manage to get together but maybe that’s something for next series – personally I think it would be too much to cram into the final two episodes of this series, what with finding out he has a son and everything. Oh and I want to see Laura with someone who isn’t going to break her trust or break her heart like Phillip did in the last series and like Fisher in this.
Bit of a long one – sorry!

Is it me or does nobody find love and keep it in LRTC? It’s like Midsommer murders! Why live in Midsommer when you know some one is going to be hacked to death by their lover/brother/ex-vicar/lovechild (delete as appriate!)?

Every one seems to be nursing a broken heart in LRTC!

Still love it though! :D

i agree great ep and Dorothea Barnes i am totally the same if they do not get together i will completely boycott bbc shows!!

i was upset that it didn’t work out for pearl but i think she loved that he loved her not him.

dorcas and james just NEED to happen!! poor dorcas when she said the wrong thing about judging!

i was reminded bout ep2 when dorcas, pearl, ruby and laura are all sitting round the dress and laura was like ‘i wonder what it must be like to be so in love with someone that you would give your life to them’ and dorcas, ruby and pearl were all really sad :(

JAMES HAS A CHILD – hopefully the mum died! :P then dorcas and james is still possible!

Think Dorcus and James definately need to end up together and as long as that eventually happens I don’t mind them dragging it out a bit – more poignant and so much better when they actually get together if they do it that way. However, if they do not end up together at all then I will be so disappointed and will feel a bit robbed.

But I do think it would be very out of character for Dorcus to forgive him quickly and it should take time for her to trust him again, as to be fair he was pretty stupid lying to her. He should get under her skin and eventually she should realise she can’t live without him! (unsure how this son thing will impact on things though – flipping writers!)

Oh I am so happy, what a wonderful episode (i kinda needed that after last week left me so depressed)! I just saw it yesterday night. Very nice story and well written. THANK YOU! It was funny and sad at the same time. You just gotta love the Pratt sisters! It was good to see that under Pearl’s hard and impeccable ‘outside’ is actually a soft and yearning ‘inside’. I couldn’t stop lauging at Ruby and Minnie :-D
I love both of them to pieces but together, as a duo, they are just unbeatable!!! I would be great to see more of them together in the future… (apropos future: any news about a 3rd season yet?)
Nan and Alfie make such a cute couple, it was good to have their story in the episode to lighten it up a bit.
I really hope that there will be a 3rd installment of LRtC, the characters have been build up perfectly and so many stories yet to tell. They can’t just wrap everything up in just 2 episodes….

Well 5.8 milion viewers on Sunday (none too shabby) and nothing but warm praise for this series – an antedote for the current depressing times, the BBC would need shooting not to commission a 3rd.

It’s great to see so many people rooting for James and Dorcas, all that tense/embarassment on Sunday has got to give us romantics somewhere to go. We love Docas’ independent spirit – but is a snog too much to ask for with 2 episodes to go?

I re-watched the previous episode from last week before (so it would be more continuous for me, and to refresh my feelings) and I think that our initial shock and fuming madness about Dorcas and JD got in the way of the actual episode. Looking back, it really wasn’t *that* bad

But oh my how I did enjoy this week’s episode :-)

Ruby and the mouse/cat story were hilarious and I was so touched by the way she had to be the strong one for her sister.
It was also nice to see Pearl having something resembling human feelings although as someone pointed out, I think she liked that he liked her, and didn’t necessarily actually like him.
Dorcas seems back to her old self – happy and chatty and giving beautiful advice (as much as she can). I loved the way she realised that, although she tries her hardest to make everyone happy, she sometimes puts her foot in it – with James, and mrs Patterson. I’m still gunning for them to get together, or at least acknowledge something somewhere!

In my opinion – this was a perfect episode. It was the Lark Rise to Candleford we all fell in love with! Before last week’s debacle! Nice to see it focussed on more minor Candleford residents like it used to.
I think Nan and Alfie might move back into the Arless’s house you know – that’ll be what he’s saving up for?!

Anyway, I am happy! Although there appears to be lots of dramatic revelations in next week’s episode so we shall see how it pans out.

Big announcement – I’m going with the flow now everyone! I have grown and realised that thses episodes were filmed months ago and by spending all our days pouring all our thoughts into what might happen, or what we think should have happened, we’re just setting ourselves up for disappointment. I think that’s why I was so pleasantly suprised with this episode. I was down so low from the ending of last week’s, that I had absolutely no expectations about this week’s at all. How wrong I was!

@Mimmi hihi… I just had to look up the word snog (english is not my 1st language)
‘Snog: a four letter word for a romantic expression involving the lips’
… but I am pretty sure a real snog involves more than just the lips :-P
I was hoping for that aswell but I doupt it now that I have seen the preview/read the spoiler for next weeks episode.
Also after what these two have already been trough (and we too!), a kiss would be too much. I am quite humble with my wishes at the moment when it comes to Dorcas and JD . But before the 2nd series is over I definitely want some kind of ‘romantic expression’ between the two of them, longing glances and the touch of hands maybe? something…anything, please!
Oh and the snogging part would than be something to look forward to in the third series :-D

Hi Lexy – yes lots of dramatic revelations, may have us reeling. Maybe best not to second guess …..goingwith the flow is so much more healthy.

Mistress – yes snog, is full on kissing, so not just an expression…lots of slurping and wetness involved…but I wont hold my breath we’ll see any, after all LRtC is a family show

I know this is a bit late because series two finshed ages ago but I just found this website. I didn’t like series two as i did series one, simply because it was to supernatural, dont get me wrong i loved the series and the ideas, i also love harry potter which i know is kind of random any way. the fact that this is based on a true story and it happened and it seemed very strange and a bit cheesey to have the child crying in Dorcas’ head on the episode when JD’s son comes in. Also the christamas edition. I mean hello there is no such thing as ghoosts any way apart from the unreal additions, which spoilt it a bit for me, i enjoyed it very much. i liked the new charecters. Minnie got on my nerves in the first episode but now i think she is a lovely edition. JD annoys me a lot which can sometimes be a good thing :/ i think. the episode when Fisher leaves was done very well in my opinion i cried so much im even crying now as i think of it but it did make me laugh when laura started punching her dad :) that was funny. I think they should bring back some of the old charecters maybe a visit from ‘Sir Tim’ andsome of the Lark Rise charecters that were only in one or two in the last series like susan and sam or old amos and young amos and pattie or whatever her name was. But I am very much looking forward to the next series :) . sorry for the bad spelling i am in a rush sort of :/ Bye
