Independent fansite for BBC One's Beautiful Drama Adaptation
A sudden storm proves the catalyst for a series of revelations that will for ever change the lives of a number of Lark Rise and Candleford residents, as BBC One’s adaptation of Flora Thompson’s childhood memoirs continues.
When the address on a letter is rendered indecipherable, Dorcas Lane pursues the identity of its recipient only to uncover a shocking secret kept from James Dowland for years. Dorcas is subsequently haunted by strange noises around the Post Office and, although greatly distressed, is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery.
Laura Timmins, meanwhile, is tormented by the knowledge of a possible betrayal. Will her intervention – even with the best of intentions – make things better for Alf and Nan? Emma also receives life-changing news that she finds impossible to tell Robert.
Later, Miss Ellison’s choice of who she wants to give her away at her wedding meets with objection, not just from Thomas Brown, but from others in the hamlet.
Julia Sawalha plays Dorcas Lane, Jason Merrells plays James Dowland, Olivia Hallinan plays Laura Timmins, John Dagleish plays Alf Arless, Rebecca Night plays Nan, Claudie Blakley plays Emma Timmins and Brendan Coyle plays Robert Timmins.

i can’t wait for this episode!!!!
Yes, I after last weeks more light hearted episode this one looks potentially more dramatic – ‘forever change the lives of a number of LR and Candleford residents’.
this ep seems very exciting! cannot wait
but i still hope dorcas and JD can get together its soo annoying! what does everyone else think?
I’m not sure JD and DL will be able to get together now, especially after what we’ve all seen on the trailer…A son?
Such scandal! He, he, he!
If I’m honest – I dont expect to see JD and Dorcas get together..in fact, I suspect that it’s likely that JD will leave…how can he stay in a small town with his illegitimate son?
Shame – I was still holding out for some passion, but the writers knocked that on the head…damn!!
I really hope they don’t write JD out of the series! I hope he will remain in Candleford (with his Son). That would be quite an interesting story line for the 3rd series (if there is one…
). Oh, I’d be shattered if the bbc decides to cease the production. I don’t think two episiodes are enough to finish the show in a satisfying way.
Series 3 confirmed !!!!!
Yay !!!

Mimmi – that’s the sentence that’s praying on my mind most from the episode description too… ‘forever change the lives of a number of LR and Candleford residents’. Argh will it be for the best? Or worst?
I don’t think JD will leave. Maybe it’s just my wishful thinking, but the press release for series 3 (wahoo!) sounds like they’re keeping him as he’s turned out to be a success.
Very much looking forward to the episode (and for the first time in week’s I’ll actually be able to watch it on Sunday!). It seems to be jam packed with intruiging revelations that will make for a very interesting (I hope in a good way) episode.
Lexy, the press release still has Olivia Grant – Lady A , so it doesn’t hold much sway for me.
I’d like to think that they keep all the main characters and JD is certainly one of them – he has a popular following I am sure…and I can see plenty of scope for developing his character – successful business man bringing changes to Candleford…besides LR is where his ‘family’ is.
it says on the BBC website that “The second series will conclude on 15 March with a Spring wedding.” but whose i wonder????
any thoughts?
Well I can only think of Margaret and Thomas. Last episode was Harvest Festival – when is that? – September?…I thought Thomas & Margaret had set the date for October mind, maybe they dilly/dally. Maybe Nan & Alf wed……………but I dont think it can be anyone else.
Am sooo confused about that “Spring wedding”? Cos it can’t be Thomas, they set the date for October…I thought??? My head hurts!
I can’t believe next week is the last episode! What will we do then? I can’t see any way that Dorcas and James will get together but maybe this is the catastrophe we need for Dorcas to realise how much she likes James? I think the wedding will be Thomas and Margaret – the dress looked too fancy for Nan and there is no one else. Bring on season 3 – yay!
I’m so pleased there’s going to be a third season!
And I really enjoyed this week’s episode – I think JD’s going to stay – I mean the Candleford residents didn’t seem to mind about his illegimate son so he doesn’t have to leave for that reason and from the trailer it looks like he can’t go anywhere anyway! I can’t wait for next weeks episode but at the same time I don’t want it end – what wll I do with my Sunday evening?
After the hunour of last week, this one was darker, but very good all the same.
The trailer would have you believe that the horse accident has left James not quite right – will he die?
Looks like Thomas and Margaret will be the happy ending for series 2
Lark Rise to Candleford was as always fab! i can’t wait for next week but it will be very sad, my Sunday evenings will be empty.
Another great episode! I’d like to commend Claudie Blakley as Emma Timmins … the best actor in the series, I think!
Blooming Heck!! What an episode!
Did anyone else’s WHOLE family take a huge intake of breath as JD fell off his horse????? Mimmi – I had the same thought as you after seeing the preview for next week… perhaps he will die (I shall be distraught) and Dorcas will be in charge of the littleun?
Did we ever find out what the present was the Nan had bought for Alf with a kiss?
Next week looks very exciting and promises to have us all on the edge of our seats, as a good series finale should!
Oh and i’ve just remembered – our whole family was also very excited to hear our home town mentioned as the source of the letter for James – Halifax!!
The present, Lexy, was the piglet for the Arliss kids to fatten up.
Going by the trailers for next week, the future is not looking good for JD, Following in the grand tradition of Series 1, get a man for Dorcas then get rid of him, and kill of a main character in the series finale, he fits the bill on both counts, so i it’s au revoir Mr Dowland………hope I’m wrong tho.
Don’t think they’ll kill him. I think the son will love staying with Miss Lane and not want to go with JD.
Then I think they’ll fight about it and JD may possibly leave with his son to get him away from Dorcus – hence the final comment I think she makes about not giving up or whatever it is etc.
I’d hope that they decide they both love him (sydney or whatever he’s called) and then re-find the fact they love each other – and get married to share him – but I reckon that’s a little too optimistic!
I think they’ll be a show down about who keeps him.
Really don’t want JD to leave though as love him.
The final words from next weeks trailer are Miss Margarets – ‘I will not be defeated’ , it’s her voice, well to my ears.
It would be a cruel stroke by the writers to have poor Sidney to loose his father, even if he prefers the PO, his father is his father.
I think I like the friction between Dorcas and JD ( a bit of tension adds to the drama very P&P) – this when he just told her where to get off, but now i’d like some mellow moments between them, a real heart to heart, the words in the note he sent her with the flowers she wouldn’t read or let him say at the hotel when she came to help him.
However, I feel the chances of that happening are extremely slim. It’s going to be a toughie, the best interests of Sidney and Dorcas has no real place to be encouraging the young lad not to make an effort with his father.
OK – shall we have sweep stake? Is JD going to 1) die at the end, 2) ride off leaving Sidney behind (keeps door open for series 3) propose again to Dorcas and marry her in a surprise spring wedding.
I think my preference is for No2,
lexy good to hear about halifax i’m from bradford
Agree with you mimmi, ‘i will not be defeated’ is definitely miss margaret’s voice.
I think the ’spring wedding’ is also margaret’s and it’s just because the episode is being shown in spring maybe.
Glad you think it’s Miss Margaret – I did at first but then couldn’t figure out what she had in life to -not be defeated’ about. Guess we’ll find out.
If you’re having a sweepstake Mimmi, i’m definitely going for option 1, purely because Laura says ‘A time to mourn’ and… if we expect the worst anything else will be a bonus
I know sandijay – all is pointing that way, he even re-wrote his will in the last episode…however, I think James will just ride off on his horse and seek to exercise his restlessness elsewhere. All the new characters like Nan and Minnie I can see staying..but I just have that strong gut feeling that James will be leaving…but the door is ajar if they dont kill him off and leave Sidney at the PO..and there is always Queenie to visit.
Never ever even read an internet forum before never mind replied to one, but have been following your discussions with as much interest as the episodes themselves, so here goes.
I have been fascinated by Lark Rise to Candleford, didn’t see the first series. Have dropped less than subtle hints to my children that ideal mother’s day would be first series on DVD, breakfast in bed and leave mum alone to watch series 1- heaven.
I am hoping that James survives but needs to ride off to Oxford to seek help from specialist doctors with his fainting. Thus needing to rely on Dorcas to help him with Sydney. Sydney & Dorcas will get on very well, and thus James & Dorcas will be thrown together and in series 3 their love will blossom again & bingo – wedding end of series 3! Or I am a hopeless romantic ???
Welcome Carole
Apparently there is a piece in this weeks ‘Total TV Guide’ – Laura, JD and Dorcas on the cover. Article and a photo of the wedding, interview with Olivia Hallinan. She says
‘…there will be a happy ending although I can’t say for whom. But viewers won’t be disappointed…’
In the photo Minnie and Laura are in their bridesmaid dresses and Dorcas is at the front in a lilac outfit holding Sidney’s hand. JD nowhere to be seen . hey are all outside the church with the vicar standing in the doorway so it looks like it’s before the ceremony rather than after.
Not sure that those of us who have a preferred ending should get too excited, Olivia may be talking about Thomas & Margaret.
Well if there was a death, that would be sad, so here’s hoping they are spareing us that.
Hello again everybody.
Can’t wait for sundays eppie! Really, really hope JD does not die, cos that would be a dead depressing end to the series…get the joke? Nope? Oh, right…
One tiny thing that really bugging me. The fainting. Every time someone faints in LRTC everyone suddenly jumps to the conculsion that they are going to die. Its really not the case, I’ve had TLOC since I was 13 and its been 16 years since then…you do the math!
(In case anyone was wondering, TLOC is a rare condidtion where the brain switches it’s self of without any warning, my case isn’t life threatening but it can be painful if I go at the top of the stairs.
But thats why I watch happy TV! Bring on the happy endings!)
I really really really REALLY hope the spring wedding is for Dorcas and James!
Reading a few theorys in this discussion, I argee with one that James’s son will want to stay with Mrs Lane, and then Dorcas will somehow find out that she indeed loves James and they marry! Opitmistic I know….
And Lexy, me and my family(except my dad) all went ‘ahhh!’ when JD fell off his horse!!
And hearing about the interview in a tv guide has made me very more opitmistic now! hehe
Mimmi and MissRose you have cheered me up no end, the only depressing thing now is i’m working sunday night and won’t be able to find out until monday morning
i loved the ep! – though i love all of them!
as soon as sydney said ‘i don’t want a father, i want miss lane’ i was like awww u can have both!!
and as soon as i saw the wedding i immediatly thought dorcas + james and was like OMG finally!! but then i remembered Thomas and Margaret are getting married…. and was a bit less happy
but i refuse to believe it is over between Dorcas and James!
they are mean to be! as soon as he came i had coupled them off! especially when she was like ‘i wouldn’t want you to think i was getting married’ and James was like ‘neither would I’ – i was like awwwww!!
DORCAS AND JAMES!! – or else!!! grrr :@
Love all the comments. I will be so dissapointed is dorcas & james dont get together, will make a fantastic ending to series 2.
I hope Bill Gallagher reads these comments. So wrong to get rid of JD. Dorcas Lane is not the same without him. In fact her character is beginning to grate on me. Her impish side is disappearing. She needs the love of a good man – JD is very good for her and we need to see a more affectionate side to her personality. Their squabbles are very enjoyable and I think they bring out the best in each other. Hope they get married – I mean, who wants a dull peaceful marriage. Are you taking note Mr Gallagher? Come on, give us a brilliant 3rd series and ending…please!!
Good points Ms Gee, I’m with ya! Dorcas needs some further development, there is no reason to say she has to stay a spinster. I think there isn’t going to be much time in episode 12 to pull all the strands together for outcome some of us want. We’ll just have to wait and see how Bill Gallagher has left things. I’ll be fuming if they kill James off, the best I am hoping for now is that even if he does ride off the door is left open for him to come back in series 3.
