Lark Rise To Candleford – Series 3 – Episode 12

Sunday 28 March
8.00-9.00pm BBC ONE

The railway has arrived in Inglestone and, with it, the unsettling news that the post office there is to become the main sorting office for the area, as the latest series of the period drama based on Flora Thompson’s novel comes to an end. Mr Blakestone, the Inglestone postmaster, has long held a grudge against Dorcas, and she fears he may use his new power to undermine her.

Meanwhile, Fisher Bloom has admitted to Daniel that he aims to win Laura back. Laura is confused by her feelings. She loves Daniel, but his apparent ambivalence towards her leads her to question their relationship, and Fisher’s romantic pursuit is beginning to have an effect.

Dorcas invites Blakestone to tea to try to restore good relations, but the postmaster sends Fisher in his place with an ultimatum – sell her post office to Blakestone and the staff will keep their jobs; or he will starve her business by sending mail out directly from Inglestone. Faced with the prospect of her staff losing their positions, Dorcas feels she has no choice but to sell up, even if it means denying Sydney his dream of being postmaster one day. However, when Thomas, Laura and Minnie learn what she is planning, they urge her to resist Blakestone’s blackmail and find a way to fight him.

Daniel is heartbroken at the thought of losing Laura, so finds a distraction in mounting a campaign to help Dorcas. In this, he and Laura have a common cause. As she watches Daniel rallying support in Lark Rise to save the post office, she finds his passion for the cause intoxicating, and realises that she still has strong feelings for him. Fisher may be able to sweep her off her feet with romantic words, but she finally understands that this kind of youthful infatuation is fleeting, and that her love for Daniel is made of deeper, longer-lasting stuff.

Buoyed up by the support of her friends and neighbours, Dorcas comes up with an ingenious plan to outwit Blakestone. However, will she succeed in saving the post office, and will a very important visitor be her saviour?

Dorcas is played by Julia Sawalha, Fisher Bloom by Matthew McNulty, Daniel by Ben Aldridge, Laura by Olivia Hallinan, Sydney by Edward Darnell-Hayes, Thomas by Mark Heap and Minnie by Ruby Bentall.

Lark Rise To Candleford is simulcast on the BBC HD channel – the BBC’s High Definition channel, available through Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media.

Hi every-one , hope you all well out there ?
I’ve just watched episode 11 , althought I’m now commenting on episode 12 . Some one posted a while ago where is this show going? and to be honset I’m begining to wonder the same thing . It all feel’s a bit like the end of season 2 when James left and now I’ve got the feeling that Fisher’s story is turning out the same way . From the above review of epiosde 12 it look’s like Laura is planing to stick with Daniel .
I loved season 2 , however Please don’t hate me , when I say this, Please , I’ve been so disappointed by this series , I thought James would be back and I just haven’t warmed to Daniel , it’s not that I dislike him , I just prefer Fisher Bloom , maybe cause I’m an Irish girl .
Even Alf & Minnie did’nt make up for it , and I really love them.
I don’t know what it is , this season seems very sugar coated & very proper in comparision with season 2 , I’m not really sure how to say it or put it , there is just something missing . I think James & Fisher brought edge , charm , passion & romance to season 2 . It just does’nt feel the same . It’s gotten all too buttoned up for my taste .
I’m not trying to be horrible , I love Lark rise , I’m just disappointed & James & Fisher are 2 of my favourite characters .
What are you all thinking out-there?

Hey all ,
Mandy I’m Irish too ! Yay .
I hear ya, If you’ve read all the post’s you probably know by now I’m a James fan , sad that their is so much Hate towards this lovely character , same with Fisher also .
I agree with you totally this very much feels like a rip off , of the end of season 2 . First it was James in 2 and now Fisher 3 .
I’ve had my finger’s crossed this whole series for Dorcas and James and Laura & Fisher and nothing !
Daniel no warmth or passion , I was routing for Mrs. Laura Bloom , passionate , firey , and sparkling . Now it seems she destined to be Mrs. Laura Parish , all proper & buttoned up .
Mrs.Parish will no doubt live a comfortable life . I however rather expect Mrs.Bloom will live a happy life .

Oh Dear ,
What have they done? It was James , now Fisher .
Mandy your right it’s all gone to gooey even for the sugar plum fairy . Not even Alf and Minnie righted it .
Feel let down by series 3 . Glad to know it’s just not me .
So wanted Dorcas & James to marry each other . You just know they would love each other passionatley forever , they are soulmates , same with Laura and Fisher .
I loved MiaLove when you said Laura Parish will have a comfortable life , where as Mrs.Laura Bloom will live a happy life , so beautifully put .
Not sure I want to see season 4 especially now their will be no James or Fisher . Why did the writer’s ever include them , if it was all just coming to nothing . I feel like what an earth was the point of season 2 .

OMG, Love this fan site , just found it .

Yes seriously what was the point of season 2 ?
I’m just as confused as you guys .

Why are they shooting them selves in the foot by removing the lovely James and Fisher ?

I’m Lost , I just don’t get it !

I hate to jump on the bandwagon but I do think this show has lost its way this Series. The first two series were extremely well done and I enjoyed all of the episodes immensely. Series 3 has been rather uneven and a little disappointing at times. I’ve heard the rumors that series 4 would only be 6 episodes and maybe that won’t be a bad thing. The writers can really focus on putting together six well-written, cohesive episodes. I still love the show but just a little less this time around.

I know what you all mean, I was glued to the first two seasons and was living in hope that Fisher would come back and claim Laura and that James would come back for Dorcas . . .

In this season I have neither been impressed nor glued to the television, I can’t warm to Daniel at all and feel that Laura would be settling for second best and denying her one true love. I got all excited watching last nights show thinking that her seeing Fisher would ignite lost love but reading the episode review above am beginning to think that she will choose the safe option rather than her true love. I hope against hope that she chooses the one where she will have no regrets and live a happy loving live.

I also hope that James will come back to help Dorcas in her hour of need, stepping up the plate!

Come on the BBC!

Glad we’re not the only ones who think the script writers are going waaay off. I reckon series one and some of series two were a more or less reasonable reflection of some of Flora’s original musings on the people she knew, but the script writers now seem hell-bent on turning the series into a period soap opera, full of teenage angst. Just think about it.

We’re almost at the point of giving up on the series.

Mandy and MiaLove: I am also part Irish (and very, very proud of it!!), there’s definitely something about that Irish lad! The Irish are so lovely: bright, shining eyes and awesome accent!
I’ve got to say though that for Laura I still favour Daniel.

God why do they get rid of every good character ?
James Dowland and now Fisher Bloom .
Talk about building us all up in season 2 with the Dorcas and James love story also the Laura and Fisher love story too , only to snatch our hopes away with series 3 .
Laura is begining to annoy me with her , Oh Daniel and Daniel is equally begining to do the same thing too . Sir.Tim equally annoying too .
At least you could relate to James and Fisher , you can identify with them their human , there’s warmth and charm about them . Oh and God James and Fisher made this show exciting it’s all gone a little to Walton mountain for my taste .
If they bring James back for Dorcas and hook them up , I’ll watch next year same goes with Laura and Fisher Bloom , if not I think this is the end of my love affair with this show .
I’m not even sure I can watch this last episode , since I know Laura will break Fisher Bloom’s heart .

Ah Fisher is back. He is so gorgeous, and those eyes!!! I guess alot of youngsters wouldn’t watch this brilliant prog. YOUR LOSS guys. They have cast a couple of the hottest guys on TV in Daniel and Fisher and I am far too old to be thinking that. They both have the most amazing eyes. I can’t miss this programme.

Don’t you think that Laura and Fisher Bloom are a bit like Emma and Robert ? I do, any who , sad that this is the end of this series , I do however think character’s like JD and Fisher Bloom do make the show more exciting .
I think some one said it had gotten a little too goody 2 shoes for it’s own good , I think they are probably right , need’s a little more Va , va voom , = JD + Fisher = more series , but that’s just in my head ,cause I’m a sap for a happy end . xoxo .

I have been writing the last episode of series three in my mind ever since I saw episode 11. I’m afraid I had to get rid of Fisher somehow, in spite of his almost irresistible Irish charm… he’s lovely for a flirtation, but not for a lifetime. Daniel is amazing, what other young man would find time to run a newspaper single handed. All the reporting, writing, sub-editing, editing, compositing, inking the press, running the press (by hand) ordering and storing the paper, feeding it to the press, selling and distributing the finished product (and never any ink on his fingers)… even for a single broad sheet, published once a week, it would take more than one man… he should take Fisher on as a trainee printer… that would keep him in the series for seven years! it did also occur to me that Laura intended to hurt Fisher as he had hurt her.

Instead of Laura having to choose between Daniel and Fisher, what about this scenario: The two lads realise that they both in fact fancy each other, decide between them to blow Laura out, and ride off into the sunset to pursue their own gay relationship. Leaving Laura blubbering into her pillow from now until season four, when a new knight in shining armour rides into town to catch her eye. Just a thought…!!!

Mandy… I know I’m part Irish….I suppose I should be rooting Fisher for Laura….it’s just that I’m really torn between him and Daniel. They’re both amazing in different ways.
I think it’s a choice between Laura’s different character traits: Daniel brings out her thoughtful, more serious side, but Fisher brings out her fun-loving and cheeky personality.
It’s a hard choice – I like both lads.

Of course, I know who Laura chooses, so I’m really worried about how she will break Fisher’s heart. I am CERTAIN that I will have tears in my eyes when Fisher finds out that she wants Daniel not him. :’( Poor man!

Amz – I know what your saying about being torn between Daniel and Fisher , so sad . I just think the Fisher character is a bit under estimated writing wise , felt the same about the JD character .
Amz what did you think about the writing this season ?
I found it to be a bit all over the place , as in where is this show going .
I would love this show to keep going for at least another couple of series .
Been thinking even though tomorrow is the last episode of series 3 , every sunday could still be a Lark rise to candleford day . All the fan’s could chat here every sunday about the show and relate news and fan fiction .
We could all have ago at posting some fan fiction at various sites or even on the message board’s here . It would be fun to read all the different stories , how each fan would write their favourite plot / story .

Hi all, have I missed something? Is there a reason why Brendan Coyle has been missing from the last two episodes after being central throughout the series? I know that Robert is supposed to be ‘visiting hi cousin’ but how strange is it that he did not return for the final episode? Is it something to do with an accident? – I seem to recall the last time I saw him he spent the episode in bed with an ‘injured back’ so I wondered if he had really had an accident, but cannot find out?

Comment from Miss Lane
Time March 28, 2010 at 9:05 pm

I agree with most of you – the writing seemed to be a bit vague and strange – the first two series were so tight, every line was worth saying, whereas this series seemed to dismiss ideas and characters without explanation, such as Ruby, Sir Tim and Dorcas, Robert lost his way a few times (such as when he hurt his back there was no impact for the family, such as money), Alfie and Nan (where did she go?) James and Dorcas, and now Fisher and Laura.

Loved JD and Dorcas relationship so much, but seemed to be ignored completely – not even one mention!! Doesn’t she remember him??

Plus, Robert wasn’t even in the last episode! Lark Rise can be so much better!

I have to admit that I agree with most of what is said here. I’m a new comer to Lark Rise and have only finished watching all the seasons. And as much as I adore the series there are some strange continuity errors. As Miss Lane points out in post 27 where did Nan go? Don’t get me wrong, Alf and Minnie are very sweet together but it kinda came out of nowhere.. And is Alf’s mother supposed to be in jail, as they’ve said a few times in the 3rd series? I thought she had gone with her husband to set up a home somewhere, as he had decided to stop sailing and go into sail making? All in all though a wonderful programme.

I thought episode 12 was well handled and avoided being too soap-opera-like. I like the writing, for the same reason I like authors such as Dickens and Maeve Binchey, where there is wider social scope than in Jane Austen. I like the way the characters interact with each other, the interdependence, particularly in Lark Rise. I found the Turrells particularly entertaining in this episode… another reason for liking Lark Rise. All age groups and most social classes play a part from baby Patience to the late, lamented and much missed Zilla (if I’ve remembered her name correctly), although her replacement, little Minnie is a delight to watch, I found myself laughing a lot in this episode… thanks to all writers, cast and crew and production team. And girls… Fisher is working with Robert at Inglestone Railway station… so there’s always the chance he will turn up again…

How much I loved the first 2 seasons I have been left now with a feeling “was that all”. Where the previous years I sat every sundaynight hoping it would be sunday again soon now I was left after every episode with a “mmmm… okay”. First of all, Laura has started to work on my system. The character annoyed me immensely. I missed James and Ruby after she left. And where was Robert in the last episodes? It just wasn’t the same anymore… pity!

I agree with many of you that S3 has been up & down. I think we need James to come back b/c he & Dorcas had intenseness with their scenes together but I esp. enjoyed the lightness of the “stairs” scene after she isn’t feeling well. You saw a tenderness in their relationship but I think the whole Sidney storyline made it difficult for him to stay. I think eventually (like Dorcas said) he would have come around to want to know his father. I think that the teacher, Mr. Delafield, was the one that Dorcas seemed to fancy the most-the rain scene was good but could have been more (if you know what I mean). I also think that perhaps Ruby may be back since at the end of S3 it sounded like from her ltr she needed to come back-they played so well off ea. other. Minnie/Alf is nice but wonder if they have enough of a bond to stay…I also wondered about Robert being gone from end of S3. I’ve never been a fan of Daniel & I esp. was hoping that Dorcas wouldn’t see him as a confidant-I always think he has alterior motives…Can’t say I’m that fond of Fisher too b/c I don’t think Laura would be happy w/him gone all the time & her away from her family. I think they need a new love interest for her & Dorcas for S4…

I saw someone post on other page of this site that Julia comments on another board dealing w/the show-anyone know what that is?

have to agree with those who say this series has lost its way somewhat but the last episode had us in stitches as we watched Thomas’s stray dog.in some scenes he had a brown patch around right eye and in others it was on his left eye!the continuity person was not doing the job properly or else the dog had its own stand in dog to help with the scenes. did anyone else notice this?

Yes, please bring back Fisher and either Tim or James for true love. Daniel is nice. But too perfect, therefore unrealistic. Series 3 could not engage us until Fisher returned…

I think that the scriptwriters are having difficulties handling the anecdotal nature of Flora’s books, plus the fact that her writing does not have proper chronological sequencing. So they are having to take isolated (and comparatively unimportant snippets) from which to try and spin a workable story.

They have managed to make 3 series out of the last one third of Flora’s Larkrise trilogy, but only by conflating some of her childhood anecdotes (even when they don’t actually involve her) with her teenage years in ‘Candleford’.

Presumably, for the fourth series they will be returning more and more to her earlier memories, but transposing them to when she was older.

As I said in a previous post, I’ve no idea where ‘Daniel’ or ‘Fisher’ come from (can’t find them in the book – perhaps I need to look harder) but ‘Laura’/Flora married one of her colleagues in the Post Office, once she moved to Liphook – so there was ultimately a happy ending, just not in ‘Candleford’!

BTW I found that that there are guided walks around the North-East Oxfordshire area that Flora wrote about so eloquently, and I shall definitely be taking advantage of that facility this summer. Apparently, some of the places she mentions in her books are still comparatively untouched (including the cottage where she was born).

To Alexander Richardson:
I’ve been searching for that tune (violin in the background of Laura and Fisher’s moment in episode 12), too. There is a Lark Rise Band cd available with the music of the theatre play several years ago, but that’s not it.
The film credits mention Julian Nott, of Wallace and Gromit theme tune fame, as composer, but no clue whether this is only for the Lark Rise theme tune or the other background music as well. I was impressed by the background music all along the series and I am inclined to believe that apart from the obvious folk tunes, Julian Nott might be responsible. Please let us know if you (BBC producers?) know the answer.

I really, really hope that the BBC film a fourth series of Lark Rise.It is the best thing on television. It is soft, gentle, funny, sad and the characters knit it all together into perfection. I love all the characters and they bring such skill to the story line. There is absolutely no comparison to soaps, like Eastenders, which are full of aggression and hatefulness. More programmes like Lark Rise would help bring society back to where it used to be, and programme makers, producers and directors should be aware of this. More, please, much more.

I think this series has been pale in comparison to the others. I love Thomas Brown but his acting has become more forced for comedy effect. He was too over the top. And Dorcas was far more clipped and buttoned up than in previous series. I have watched it and enjoyed some parts but I don’t think it’s been anywhere near as good as the series before. Sorry all you fans ( I am one too honest!)

I hope Daniel goes next series andsomeone with a bit of personality comes in for Laura, he was like a wet lettuce! Bring back Ruby too now she has had her baby we want her back! Pearl is lost without her! And one last thing, Alf and Minnie!! Purleeeese!

I did enjoy this last episode. I am sorry but I loved Alf & Minnie they are what each other needs and in my opinion perfect for each other. :) I don’t hate Daniel but I honestly don’t care if he is back next series. I did not like Fisher in season 2 and was not thrilled with him in season 3 so while I am glad Laura picked Daniel I honestly don’ t care if he is back for more. I do love Dorcas so as long as she is on the show I will be happy. She does not need a love interest to make me happy but I would love her to find love other then a mothers love.

I am not sure where Fisher comes from in Flora Thompson’s writings, but it is known that when she worked in Grayshott, she was friendly with a journalist on the Hazelmere local ‘paper. I think the two characters of Daniel and Fisher represent her changing world… not just from a rural hamlet to a country town, but with the coming of the railways, telegraphs and telephones and the implications of these. I remember when I read Lark Rise at school, I made a mental note never to live in a hamlet or a village not realising how things had changed!

I agree there was more romance with Fisher and therefore I was slightly more on his side. But, I do think her choosing Daniel seemed more realistic to the character and the show. If she had gone off with Fisher it all would have seemed too “and they rode of in the sunset and lived happily ever after”. Watching the episode though made me feel as torn as Laura did. That’s great acting and story telling when they can make you feel what the characters are going through! How heartbreaking was that last scene when they had to say goodbye? Does anyone know what music was playing during that?
