I like Pearl, but she is so bossy! I feel sorry for Ruby, the way she bosses her about so much!

Yes, she is very bossy and very much in charge of her sister. But I think that she practically raised Ruby by herself and I think that’s where her bossyness (and protectiveness to some extent) comes from.
As we saw in the episode where their father came to Candleford, she does have a good heart buried somewhere deep down, but she’s very afraid of getting hurt I think.

They make such a hilarious pair though, with their thirst for gossip and the devious ways in which they try to prise that gossip out of people!

I don’t feel sorry for Ruby, I feel sorry for Pearl! Ruby is below average intelligence and she has to look out for her all the time. She couldn’t really survive without her.

I agree she’s got a heart in there somewhere, it just doesn’t show itself very often. She’s strong willed and intelligent. She’s also very lonely. I can entirely see what Cabbage Patterson sees in her. I’ve never exactly warmed to her but I’ve always found her striking and rather attractive!

I’ve never exactly warmed to her as a person – far too troublemaking (remember when she got shot of Mr Delafield?) and gossip-mongering for my liking.

But I admire her for practically bringing up Ruby by herself and can see her funny side. Although I find her funny now, I’m not sure I would have done if she was in my community at the time!

She looked positively glowing this week – must be what love does to you! Yes it was very sweet to her with a first-love, and shame it didn’t work out, but I’m surprised she didn’t have ANY moral objections to what she was doing. Oh she of the judging-of-other-people, commiting this terrible act of adultery.
